How loan EMIs work

This calculator uses the standard amortization formula and works for personal loans, auto loans, or any other fixed-rate installment loan.

01

The EMI formula

Lenders spread principal and interest into equal monthly installments over your loan tenure.

M = P × [r(1+r)n] / [(1+r)n − 1]
MMonthly EMI
PLoan amount (principal)
rMonthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12)
02

Example calculation

A ₹2,50,000 loan at 11% interest over 5 years.

Monthly Payment₹5,437
Total Interest₹76,220
Total Payment₹3,26,220
03

Reducing your total interest

A few habits can meaningfully lower how much interest you pay over the life of the loan.

1

Make extra payments

Any additional amount toward the principal reduces the balance interest is calculated on, shortening the loan.

2

Choose a shorter tenure

A shorter tenure raises the EMI but cuts total interest significantly over the loan's life.

3

Compare rates first

Even a 1% difference in interest rate can change total interest paid by a noticeable amount.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about loan EMIs and how this calculator works.

What types of loans can I calculate here?

Any fixed-rate installment loan — personal loans, auto loans, appliance loans, or similar — as long as it has a fixed interest rate and tenure.

Does this include processing fees?

No — this calculates principal and interest (EMI) only. Lenders often add a one-time processing fee, so your actual upfront cost may be slightly higher.

What happens if I prepay part of the loan?

Prepaying reduces your outstanding principal, which lowers either your EMI or your remaining tenure, depending on what your lender allows.
